THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELED. Executive Function Skills: Foundation for Learning & Adaptation

12:00—3:00 (11:30 am check in)  Snacks provided. 12:00—2:00 Executive Function Foundation. 2:00—3:00 Demonstration of Executive Function Assessment Tool — Minnesota Executive Function ScaleTM (MEFS)

Attend this workshop to learn about Executive Function skills for children, what they are, why they’re important, how they develop, and how to use a measurement tool to identify and support strengths and areas for improvement.

Executive Function refers to social emotional learning and the neurocognitive skills that are most vital to academic and life success. These skills, which can be taught and learned, are centered on attention, impulse control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility.

Executive Function skills make it possible for children to learn effectively and efficiently in a classroom context, and they protect children against academic failure associated with socioeconomic status.

   Key Ideas:

· What is Executive Function?

· Why should we measure it?

· What is the MEFS?

· How is the assessment tool different?

· How are districts using it?

District and school administrators, curriculum directors, social workers, and other leaders will want to attend this workshop.

Presenter Stephanie M. Carlson, PhD, co-founder and CEO of Reflections Sciences, is a developmental psychologist and professor at the Institute of Child Development, U of MN. She is an internationally recognized leader in Executive Function measurement in preschool children. The National Institutes of Health, Institute of Education Sciences, John Templeton Foundation, and the Character Lab have supported her work. Dr. Carlson is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, and serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards in the child development field.
