THIS EVENT IS FOR TEACHERS OF DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS ONLY.
Presenter: Sharon Saunders, Certified SIM Professional Developer Facilitator: Deb Shepley, Certified SIM Professional Developer
CEU Hours: Up to 25 upon completion of assignments
Description: The Visual Imagery Strategy, a reading comprehension strategy, is used by students (at grades 3 and above reading levels) to create “mental movies” of reading passages. Students learn techniques that help them visualize the scenery, characters, and action related to a passage read. They actually learn to describe what they see as they read. This enhances reading comprehension by improving recall of facts and sequences. The Visual Imagery Strategy also requires students to tie reading passages to prior knowledge. The series will also cover tips for assessing your student's reading level, links to academic standards, and IEP goal development for the strategy.
24/7 ACCESS: Real time training is accessed on any personal computer with Internet connection and scheduled outside of the school day (see Schedule). If a session is missed, teachers can watch a captioned recording. Supplemental materials are available online.
INTERACTIVE: The format is videoconference. Participants can ask questions and share insights “live.” Modeling via document camera is an integral part of each session. Teachers can access virtual coaches and get specific feedback, encouragement, and clarification.
PROGRESS MEASURES: The two manuals that accompany this training give teachers data tools to measure student progress.
COURSE COMPLETION: Participants have access to virtual coaching for several weeks after the last session on December 5. That period can be used to complete course assignments and earn full credit for the course.
