Sheltered Instruction (SIOP®) Refresher with Martina Wagner

This session is designed to revisit and review additional siop®  resources and strategies that can be used immediately in the classroom. Participants will revisit all eight components of SIOP®  with specific focus on the advanced development of creating content and language objectives, increasing higher cognitive demand for English Language Learners (ELLs) in the mainstream classroom, and differentiating scaffolds and supports specific to various proficiency levels of ELLs.

Participants will be highly engaged in analyzing content area language load and will receive guidance in addressing language in instruction, coursework and assessments. You will also walk away with additional engagement strategies that can be used immediately in the classroom to benefit each and every learner.

Overview of English Language Learner Best Practice

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) is a research-based and validated instructional model for lesson design and delivery that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners throughout the United States.

The SIOP® Model consists of eight interrelated components:

1. Lesson preparation

2. Building background

3. Comprehensible input

4. Strategies

5. Interaction

6. Practice/application

7. Lesson delivery

8. Review/assessment

Using instructional strategies connected to each of these components, teachers are able to design and deliver lessons that address the academic and linguistic needs of English learners.

Who should attend?

Mainstream teachers, ELL specialists, instructional coaches, administrators who have had previous SIOP® training and have worked/will be working with English Language Learners.
