WEBINAR SERIES OVERVIEW:
As our EL populations continue to evolve, educators are tasked with the challenge of creating rigorous, yet welcoming environments for learners of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. These webinars will address ways you can create a welcoming learning environment for ELs and make language and content accessible for learners from different educational backgrounds and proficiency levels.
Who Should Attend? Content or Grade-Level Teachers, ELL Specialists, Instructional Coaches, Curriculum Specialists, Para-Educators, Teaching Assistants who support English Language Learners in the mainstream.
Participants Will:
- Differentiate learning needs for ELs of varying proficiency levels
- Identify academic language needed to access science/biology content
Presenters:
Krista Schweppe currently teaches English Learners at North High School in North St. Paul, MN. For the past five years she has focused her energy on finding ways to make the language and content of science accessible for English Learners. Through close collaboration with her building’s science department, she has developed and co-taught sheltered content courses designed for ELs of all levels. Krista has her Masters in English as a Second Language from Hamline University.
Michelle Zwirn has been a science teacher for 24 years and is currently teaching at North High School in North St. Paul , MN. She has taught a variety of science subjects: Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, EL Biology, Forensic Science, and Human Anatomy. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry and a Masters of Education degree from St. Mary’s University.
