Motivation and Language
Cultural liaisons serve as a bridge between our culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families and learners. Liaisons leverage their cultural capital to ensure equitable approaches that meet the needs of families. As populations shift and change in MN liaisons and all staff must be equipped with understandings of educational theories and models for language development, best practices and strategies for motivating their learners and keeping them engaged in school. With these understandings liaisons will be able to support families and districts by creating an environment of collaboration and engagement, moving beyond simple involvement.
This workshop will help liaisons to better work with CLD learners, mainstream and district staffs to ensure programs meet needs of learners providing access to both language and content development coursework and
OUTCOMES:
• Understanding of second language acquisition in formal and informal settings
• Understanding of methods, techniques and practices for instruction of culturally and linguistically diverse populations
• Be able to communicate information on second language acquisition to parents and students in a familiar manner
• Be able to recognize and describe methods, approaches and practices to families
• Participants will create an actionable plan to improve their own work
FACILITATOR:
Jake Law has been involved in education for more than 8 years in areas of Peru, Chile, Mexico and the US. His areas of focus are in instructing and assessing multilingual learners, curriculum and program development, design and implementation of systems for newcomer students. He is passionate about supporting our MLLs and staff that work with them.

**Metro ECSU is moving towards a micro-credentialing systems in the future. We know that learning happens every day both inside and outside of the classroom in formal and informal settings. Micro-credentials are a natural extension of the professional development opportunities we offer. Micro-credentials allow educators to prove their competency in areas by reviewing research, putting it to use in their classrooms, and documenting and reflecting on their learning. Micro-credentials with ECSU will be available on demand and personalized to the learners
