Equitable Grading Practices of English Language Learners

Do you have equitable grading practices for English Language Learners? Some common
questions that come up with district and site based English programs include these:

? What are challenges you or your colleagues have in grading ELs?
? What are some strategies or tools that you find helpful in grading ELs?
? Do you have good examples of report cards that include English Language considerations?

Join this session to reimagine grading supports and practices for your school/district English Language
Programs.

Who Should Attend? English language learner teachers, content teachers, EL directors, curriculum specialists or
coordinators.

This 90 minute session will include Dr. Staehr-Fenner sharing insights for considerations on grading,
formative assessment, and a Q&A session for specific school/district programming guidance.

Diane Staehr Fenner, Ph.D. is the president of SupportEd, LLC, a woman-owned small
business based in the Washington, DC area. Diane serves as project lead for all the team’s
work providing EL professional development, programmatic support, curriculum design, and
research to school districts, states, organizations, and the U.S. Department of Education. Diane
is an author of four books, a blogger for the Colorín Colorado website, and a frequent
keynote presenter on EL education at conferences across North America. Her latest book is
the bestselling Unlocking English Learners’ Potential: Strategies for Making Content Accessible,
co-authored with her colleague Dr. Sydney Snyder. Diane was a research associate at
George Washington University’s Center for Excellence and Equity in Education and spent a
decade as an ESOL teacher, dual language assessment teacher, and ESOL assessment specialist in
Fairfax County Public Schools, VA.
