Four Score and Seven Years Ago….
Keeping Social Studies Relevant and Accessible for English Language Learners

In this half-day session, we will uncover some effective strategies that work with all levels of English Learners in the secondary Social Studies content area; from newcomer to advanced students.

Participants will:

  • Identify the most relevant standards in the curriculum.
  • Incorporate strategies to make a dense content accessible.
  • Create hands-on activities.
  • Use effective assessment tools.

Presenter:
Rainbow Espinosa
has been teaching ESL in the Metro Area for 10 years, working with all level English Learners from newcomer to advanced students. She is currently teaching at North High School in North Saint Paul, working specifically with the Social Studies department. Her work includes an introductory class that pre-teaches Social Studies concepts and vocabulary necessary to be successful in academic courses, as well as co-teaching a variety of classes for 9-12th grade students, fulfilling their content credits for graduation. She also advises and collaborates with content teachers on strategies for ELs in mainstream classes. Rainbow has a Master’s of Education in Second Languages and Cultures from the University of Minnesota.
