Deaf Culture and Expressive Skills Interaction

Deaf Culture, Cued Speech, Listening and Spoken Language, and American Sign Language Users- The Journey.  The morning presentation will cover a history of Deaf Culture, and how Cued Speech came in existence, and how to provide a sense of belonging in our Deaf/Hard of Hearing children, and provide them the tools to succeed as a well-adjusted Deaf/Hard of Hearing person.  An interpreter will be present to facilitate communication.  The afternoon will focus on facial expression and cued expressive skills interaction.

Presenters:

Chelsea Tobin Paulson earned her bachelors in Deaf Education and Elementary Education from Augustana College and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with Math Certification. She has taught at South Dakota, Idaho and at Minnesota. Chelsea was a former National Association of the Deaf’s Miss Deaf America through their Youth Programs (currently called Youth Ambassadorship Program). She has presented at conferences on how to teach children who are DHH whose families are from diverse backgrounds.

Chelsea is passionate about to children who are DHH. She loves to raise her two young Children of Deaf Adult (CODAs) with her husband, Jared. Finding ways to support their language development is thrilling.

Sarah Druley is a certified ASL interpreter and a certified Cued Language Transliterator.  Sarah has worked in a variety of capacities.  She enjoys interpreting, transliterating, mentoring, and teaching for both children and adults.  As the president of the Cued Speech Association of Minnesota, she seeks to coordinate cued speech education classes and promote cued speech in Minnesota.
