Back to School 2018: Trading Places

Date:  August 29, 2018

Time:  8:30-3:30

Fee:  $25.00

Workshop description:

This workshop is intended to give the educational interpreter a view from the student’s seat.  Presenters, Kristin Ryan and Mandy Frederickson, will be presenting lessons just as they would be taught at MDS.  This will provide participants an opportunity to see how the lesson would be presented by a Native ASL user.  Participants will have the opportunity to see authentic representations of core classes being taught in ASL while gaining exposure to new ways of expressing key concepts, extensive use of Classifiers and receptive work.  The day will be split between classroom lectures, interactive breakout discussions, role play, and activities on how to apply the new information to classroom interpreting.

Presenters:

Kristin Ryan is a teacher at Metro Deaf School in St. Paul, MN and has been in the field for over 15 years.  She has a BA in Elementary Education and a Masters in Special Education from the U of M.  She is certified in ASL/English Bilingual Instruction.  Currently she serves as the Board’s treasurer and has served on the MDS school board since 2012.  She is also an adjunct faculty member at St. Catherine’s University teaching American sign language.  She freelances as a Deaf interpreter and is involved with the Minnesota Department of Education Transition Advisory Committee and on the Interpreter Extension Review Committee.  In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, her two mastiffs, reading, and cooking new recipes.

Mandy Frederickson has been teaching in deaf education for over 24 years.  She has taught elementary, middle and high school level reading and writing to Deaf students.  Currently she is the ASL specialist at Metro Deaf school in St. Paul, MN where she assesses students’ ASL skills for IEPs. Mandy is a Minnesota native and enjoys reading and traveling during her free time.
