The Evolution of Teaching Sheltered Science
Who Should Attend? Content or Grade-Level Teachers, ELL Specialists, Instructional Coaches, Curriculum Specialists, Para-Educators, Teaching Assistants who support English Language Learners in the mainstream.
In this half-day session, we will dissect effective strategies that can be implemented with all levels of English Learners across Secondary Science content areas.
Participants will:
- Identify the most relevant standards in the curriculum.
- Incorporate strategies to make a dense content accessible (e.g.hands on materials, activities and labs)
- Design and implement effective assessment tools
Presenters:
Krista Schweppe currently teaches English Learners at North High School in North St. Paul, MN. For the past five years she has focused her energy on finding ways to make the language and content of science accessible for English Learners. Through close collaboration with her building’s science de-partment, she has developed and co-taught sheltered content courses designed for ELs of all levels. Krista has her Masters in English as a Second Language from Hamline University.
Michelle Zwirn has been a science teacher for 24 years and is currently teaching at North High School in North St. Paul , MN. She has taught a variety of science subjects: Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, EL Biology, Forensic Science, and Human Anatomy. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry and a Masters of Education degree from St. Mary’s University.
