August Full Day Interpreter Training

Date:  August 17, 2020
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.   (11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Lunch Break)

I'm Just a Bill 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Workshop description:  Elections and the legislative process dominate the news in today’s society. This workshop will review how an idea becomes a bill that becomes a law. The workshop will also go over some election concepts and signs. There will be frequent mention of caucuses, primaries, budgets, and vetoes in the classroom – let’s make sure we understand the systems at work and communicate clearly and effectively the message to increase civic awareness and engagement with deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing students.  Presentation will be presented in spoken English.

Academic Language: How do DHH Kids Successfully Navigate the Educational Setting? 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Workshop descriptionStudents go to school with some language already developed, but they must learn the secret language of school or Academic Language. This language is necessary for success in school and includes all the specific ways teachers communicate and give directions. If students do not know this language, they will struggle. This workshop looks at the aspects of Academic Language as it relates to DHH students.
