One of the most challenging aspects of cued language transliteration that CLTs face is voicing.  Inherent in developing that skill is receptive cueing ability. This class will work from that premise through exposure and hands-on practice within the group, leading up to interactive video segments of real conversations between hearing and deaf consumers. Participants will explore the steps to voicing fluency with cue reading practice, auditory prosody development and interactive voicing segments, while simultaneously considering the TECUnit Code of Conduct for guidance. Through whole group and small group activities, partner work and break out “rooms” with scaffolded instructions, we will use combinations of discussion, hands-on practice and games to build the strategies necessary for successful voicing performance.

Presenters:
Jane Dolan, TSC, is a nationally certified cued language transliterator and a transliterator trainer for Language Matters, Inc.  Jane's family was the very first to learn to cue from the inventor of Cued Speech, Dr. R. Orin Cornett. Her family then began cueing English with her older sister, Leah. This makes Jane the first native hearing cuer and one of the first cueing transliterators. Jane worked for several years at the Cued Speech Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she taught many cued American English classes and did transliterator mentoring. For the last fifteen years, Jane has worked as a freelance cued language transliterator, primarily in the post-secondary educational setting. She is passionate about the proper practice of cued language transliteration and is an active transliterator trainer with LMI.  Jane has also served as president of the North Carolina Interpreter Transliterator Licensing Board. Jane currently serves on the TECUnit Board as Treasurer.

Claire Klossner, NIC, TSC is an online Cued Speech instructor for Gallaudet University. She is an NCSA certified Cued Speech instructor (since 2004), a TECUnit certfied CLT (2004), and an RID certified ASL-English interpreter (2008). Claire has been teaching for Language Matters Inc. for more than 20 years. Claire is enrolled in a master’s degree program in Distance Education and E-Learning through the University of Maryland Global Campus and is passionate about making online professional development for CLTs the best it can be.

If the event has a fee, refunds are possible only if cancellation is prior to the deadline. If you do not attend and do not cancel prior to an event, you are still responsible for payment and will be billed.
