Presented in ASL Only.
For K-12 ASL Educational Interpreters, Teachers of Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Related Service Providers of Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students
Workshop description: There is increasing importance being placed on the role that accurate ASL signs for mathematical/number systems play in teaching and learning in the classroom. Most teachers and interpreters do not have signs for advanced mathematical terms and may fingerspell those terms to avoid inventing signs. When teachers and interpreters have different signs for certain numerical terms in ASL, it is possible that a lack of standardization may impact learning. This workshop is designed to assist new and experienced mathematics teachers in deaf programs/schools, teachers of deaf/hard of hearing and ASL interpreters who are interested in learning about and improving their use of mathematical/number signs. This workshop will help teachers and interpreters to become more familiar with mathematical/number terms and how to apply them when teaching or interpreting in math and science classes.
Workshop objectives:
- Demonstrate an improved understanding of the interpreting process for math/Numbers in ASL topics.
- Incorporate illustrations from math textbooks into interpretations.
- Analyze math/Numbers and ASL texts and create varied interpretations into the target language.
- Use visualization techniques to better inform interpretation of math/Numbers materials.
