For K-12 ASL Educational Interpreters

Workshop description:

Effective feedback is crucial for interpreters to continue reflecting on and improving their work. Many interpreters find that there are barriers to doing effective feedback, whether that's personal stressors, questions about navigating professional relationships, or a need for shared interpreting vocabulary. This workshop will provide interpreters and interpreter mentors tools to create assessment for yourself or others that is objective, non-judgmental, specific, and realistic. This workshop gives tools for how to talk about interpreting work and guiding conversations about the cognitive process that's happening behind the scenes.  Most of all, this workshop gives language that helps participants feel supported and able to stay in the conversation.

Workshop objectives:

  • Examine the boundaries between personal worth and work product
  • Experiment with objective and non-judgmental language during feedback practice
  • Identify interpreting theory and models that can be used for specific and realistic feedback
  • Associate societal experiences with barriers to effective feedback
