Workshop Description: 

This course is geared toward cued language transliterators who wish to further develop the skill of transphonation.  By the end of this intermediate/advanced-level course, participants will be able to:

  • Specify the parameters of speech that characterize consonant and vowel phonemes.
  • Differentiate the terms accent, dialect, and idiolect.
  • Explain the process of transphonation.
  • Identify factors that contribute to pronunciation.
  • Analyze and describe common patterns of dialectal variation and how they would be cued.

Presenter:

Thomas Shull, TSC, MS, CCC-SLIP has worked as a cued language transliterator in educational and freelance settings for more than thirty years.  He currently works as a speech-language pathologist for Boston Public Schools.  In his private practice, he specializes in accent modification.  He is the Team Lead for online Communication, Sciences, and Disorders (CSD) prerequisite courses at the MGH Institute of Health Professions where he teaches phonetics to future speech therapists.
