The Catalyst Approach: Keeping Them in the Classroom

Facilitators: Jacki Brickman & Nancy Burns, The Catalyst Approach

Audience: Classroom Teachers, Administrators, Directors

Research shows that the meaningful connections adults make with students help them to feel safe, understood, and valued as a full member of the classroom community, and as a by-product, motivates them to stay in the classroom and engage in learning even longer. At the same time, there are students who have needs or bear burdens that manifest in behaviors that lead to children being misunderstood, misrepresented, and marginalized.

This impacts the delicate balancing act of educators as they attempt to keep these individuals in the room and, at the same time, support each and every student in staying focused and engaged in learning.

The concepts and strategies taught in Keeping Them in the Room help educators understand the ways adults can disrupt harmful practices while replacing them with new ones, that help students build self-esteem and reduce feelings of shame and anxiety that develp in students who often struggle to find success in school.

This course will allow you to:

  • Identify and understand the unintentional impact many common strategies have on students who struggle to find success in school leading to them being misunderstood, marginalized, and misrepresented by the adults in a school.
  • Understand the impact that understanding neurodivergence and neurotypical brain development can have on one's ability to support students
  • Increase your empathy and compassion for students who are hard for you to understand
  • Learn about the classroom conditions for supporting students who are most at risk of spending more time out of the classroom and "in the office"
  • Manage your own interactions effectively when interatcting with students
