Electrical Safety for Non-Electrical Workers

Time: 12:00PM - 4:00PM

Facilitator: John "Grizzy" Grzywacs, Professor Emeritus OSHA National Training Institute

OSHA as well as NFPA Standards require all workers including non-electrical workers also receive electrical safety training. This event is for non-electrical workers and is a fundamental overview of electricity, electrical safety and electrical hazard recognition. An employee doesn’t have to be a qualified electrical worker (electrician) to be using electrical equipment, appliances and tools in the workplace. This could expose them to serious electrical hazards including electrocution, for example if an appliance is damaged or has a missing ground. Some of the topics to be covered include equipment grounding and its importance, where can arc blast/arc flash exposures occur, GFCI’s, ampacity and electrical overloads. Also the hazards associated with the misuse of production and other electrical equipment as well as the potential injuries that could occur with such use is discussed and underscored. Typical examples of exposure to hazardous conditions will be both discussed as well as demonstrated and since electricity behaves the same both at home as well as the workplace specific guidance for identifying and avoiding these hazards will be covered.

  • What should you look for when purchasing electrical appliances and electrical equipment to be sure they are safe?
  • What is the purpose of electrical grounding and why is it important?
  • How do I safety reset a circuit breaker if it trips?
  • What are those special looking electrical outlets I have at home with the test buttons on them, how do they work and how should I test them?
  • What are some common electrical conditions which can cause fire?
