Math Masters - Grade 5: www.sparkpath.org/mathmasters

Math Masters is a mathematics competition with a 30+ year history in Minnesota. The goal of the program is to challenge 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Students compete as individuals and on teams in multiple rounds of competition during a half-day event in March or April (registered schools select a date and competition location). Students’ academic effort and achievement are recognized with plaques, medallions, and ribbons in each competition element: Fact Drill, Individual Round, and Team Competition. After all competitions have been completed, the top finishers throughout the state are invited to celebrate at a Minnesota Twins game. SparkPath partners with Math Masters, a nonprofit organization, to provide coordination and an Arden Hills competition location (at our office building) for students in 5th grade. This competition aligns with Minnesota Academic Standards in Math.

Competition test materials are carefully prepared by math department faculty members at St. Cloud State University and the College of Saint Benedict / Saint John’s University. Between six and eight rounds of problems cover the following mathematical areas:

  • Number Facts / Order of Operations
  • Numeracy / Property of Numbers
  • Geometry / Time / Money
  • Statistics / Probability / Counting
  • Decimals / Fractions / Percents

SparkPath is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by BrightWorks (formerly Metro ECSU) to provide student enrichment programs. Registration for student programs is done through SparkPath's website.
