This workshop is about working with and building relationships with students and their parents/guardians who live in a daily survival mode. Children raised in generational poverty often don't have the same chance for success as other children because they don't understand middle class norms. Our schools and jobs are built on middle-class values and norms.

Participants will examine and discuss:
Situational and generational poverty
Hidden rules of class
Registers of language
How family structure can affect competition and cooperation
Resources that support training

Presenter: Pat Anderson has been providing classes in understanding generational poverty since 2001. She has served as the Region IV Director of Basic Skills for MDE and was the Manager of Education Services for Lakes Country Service Cooperative in Fergus Falls until her retirement in 2008. Pat has taught elementary students in Minnesota and North Dakota and was the Director of the Simley High School Learning Center in the Inver Grove Heights School District. She has served as an adjunct faculty member for NDSU since 1996. Pat continues to provide training for educators and other service providers as an independent consultant. In addition, she provides grant evaluations for various agencies and funding sources.
