Morning DESCRIPTIONS

4 Block Overview/Literacy Instruction, Cathy Pinkosky
Does the student

  • Know most of the letters most of the time?
  • Engage actively during shared reading?
  • Have a means of communication and interaction?
  • Understand that writing involves letters and words?

We often hear of the Four Blocks model for conventional literacy intervention – Guided Reading, Self?
Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words; however, if the answer to any of the above
questions is “No”, there is an alternate model for emergent literacy intervention – Shared Reading,
Predictable Chart Writing, Alphabet & Phonological Awareness, Independent Writing, and Independent
Reading. We will explore the topic of core vocabulary for students who use AAC and delve into the
emergent literacy intervention model.

Nurtured Heart – RESET! Deb West
This course is appropriate for staff that has had initial training in the Nurtured Heart Approach. This 3
hour course will introduce participants to the concept of the RESET and provide ideas for how to teach
reset and how to use it effectively.

Afternoon DESCRIPTIONS

4 Block Advanced Writing, Kayna Plaisted
4 Block Advanced Writing: In this presentation, attendees will dive deep into connected activities to
learn what it takes to create a comprehensive Writing Block. This will include both conventional and
emergent lessons which support a complete Four Block Framework. Conventional writing will target
the writing process (Drafting, Editing, Revising etc.) while emergent writing will target writing by, with
and for children (Predictable Chart Writing, Morning Message, Journaling etc.). We will also discuss
writing with alternative pencils and how this effects the lessons we teach.

Nurtured Heart Approach? Introduction, Deb West
This is a three hour introductory course to introduce the concepts of the Nurtured Heart Approach.
This is a methodology that takes everything we know about behavior, kids and more, then wraps it in a
package that works quickly and without gimmicks. It's not difficult to implement and doesn't involve
worksheets, rewards, data sheets or point cards. It involves a mindset that brings true change. The
essence of the Approach is a set of core methodologies originally developed for working with the most
difficult children. It has a proven impact on every child, including those who are challenged
behaviorally, socially and academically.
