Course Description: Related service personnel find joy in meeting children's needs along their growth and development journey. While the team collaboration between related service therapist(s), teaching staff, parents, and their child offers a supportive learning environment, this dynamic and complex interaction may lead to ethical challenges. The principles guiding "best" practices in school-based therapy endorse family-centered care and shared decision-making amongst team members (Delany & Galvin, 2014) but often defer to school policy or parental style, beliefs, and values whenever possible (Delany, 2020). Yet, knowledge incongruence exists within the team. While related service therapists possess the discipline-specific information required for progress, teaching staff and parents know the child's needs, behavioral tendencies, and past experiences best. Most ethical concerns arise from this incongruence and center around two main themes: acting in the child's best interest and respecting the autonomy of teaching staff, parents, and children (Delany, 2020). This presentation will offer a four-part model to quickly analyze these situations across a spectrum of perspectives. Participants will apply the model to relevant related service scenarios and build the capacity to manage paradoxical situations.

Objectives:
1. Compare and contrast principles, concepts, and guiding documents available as ethical analysis resources
2. Explore different types of ethical concerns, including various right-versus-right dilemmas
3. Identify the range of ethical concerns experienced by related service personnel in school-based therapy
4. Describe the Dialogic Engagement Model (DEM) for ethical decision-making in interprofessional practice
5. Apply DEM to analyze ethical situations encountered in school-based therapy
